5 Trade Website Mistakes That Are Costing You Jobs

By Osian Gwynedd · August 2026 · 6 min read

I've audited a lot of trade websites over the last eight years. And here's the honest truth: almost all of them are making the same five mistakes.

Doesn't matter if it's a plumber, a sparky, a joiner or a roofer. Doesn't matter if the site was built by a mate, a Fiverr designer, or a "web design agency" that charged £2,000. The mistakes are near-identical — and each one is costing you real, countable jobs every month.

Here they are, ranked by how much they're actually costing you.

Mistake #1: You've Got A Three-Page Brochure, Not A Website

Home. About. Contact. Maybe a "Services" page that lists what you do in one paragraph.

That's not a website that generates leads. That's an online business card. And it's the single reason most trade businesses don't show up on Google.

Why it costs you: Google ranks websites based partly on how much relevant content you have for a given search. A three-page site has almost nothing for Google to work with. If someone searches "kitchen fitter Cardiff" and your site has one paragraph mentioning "we fit kitchens", you're not going to rank — even if you're the best kitchen fitter in Cardiff. Meanwhile, your competitor with a page for kitchen fitting, a page for bathroom fitting, a page for each area they cover, and a blog is getting the calls.

The fix: A proper multi-page website with a dedicated page for each service you offer AND each area you work in. If you're a plumber in Cardiff who also covers Barry, Penarth and the Vale, that's four location pages minimum. Plus a page for each service (bathroom fitting, boiler repair, emergency call-outs, and so on). This is Google's raw material — without it, you're invisible.

Mistake #2: Your Phone Number Isn't Tappable On Mobile

Over 70% of trade searches happen on a phone. Someone Googles "electrician near me" while stood in front of a fuse box. They land on your site. They see your phone number in the footer, in tiny grey text, as an image.

They can't tap it. They have to squint, type it into their dialler manually, and hope they got it right. Half of them don't bother — they hit "back" and call the next result.

Test it now: pull up your website on your phone. Can you tap your phone number in the header and have it start dialling? If not, you're actively losing leads that made it all the way to your site.

The fix: Every phone number on the site should be a real tel: link. It should be visible in the header without scrolling. It should be the biggest, most obvious thing on your homepage on mobile. When someone lands on your site with intent, don't make them work to reach you.

Mistake #3: You've Got No Reviews Showing On The Site

You might have 30 Google reviews. Great. But if someone's on your website, they can't see them unless they click over to Google, search for you, and find your profile. Most won't bother.

Why it costs you: A visitor on your site is 3 seconds away from deciding to call you or call the next tradesman. In that 3 seconds, they're looking for one thing: proof you're not going to rip them off. Reviews on your site provide that proof instantly. No reviews = no proof = they leave.

The fix: Pull your Google reviews into a widget on your homepage. Show a running count ("★★★★★ from 47 reviews on Google"). Feature 2–3 recent quotes with the reviewer's first name and location. This is trust-building on autopilot — and it's the difference between a visitor calling you and clicking back to Google.

Mistake #4: Your Site Takes 6 Seconds To Load On Mobile

Google is ruthless about page speed. If your homepage takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone, Google buries you in the search results. Full stop.

And even if you did rank, the visitor would leave anyway — over 50% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load.

Why most trade sites are slow: They're built on bloated page-builders like WordPress with a stack of plugins, hosted on cheap shared servers, with unoptimised images the size of a small country. Every one of those things adds seconds to your load time.

The fix: A properly built site loads in under 2 seconds. That means clean code, optimised images (WebP, correctly sized), fast hosting (Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or similar), and no bloated plugins slowing everything down. If you're not sure how slow your site is, run it through Google's PageSpeed Insights — it'll give you a mobile score out of 100. Under 50 = urgent problem.

Mistake #5: You've Got Multiple Competing CTAs (Or None At All)

What do you want the visitor to do when they land on your site? Call you? Fill in a form? Book a job? Read your about page?

Most trade sites answer this with "all of them", so the homepage has a phone number in the header, a "Get a Quote" button, a "Contact Us" form, a "Book Now" link, and half a dozen scattered "learn more" buttons. Every option added reduces the chance the visitor takes any action — it's called decision paralysis, and it's costing you leads.

Or you've got the opposite problem: no CTA at all. Just information. The visitor reads it, nods, closes the tab.

The fix: Pick ONE primary action you want the visitor to take — usually "call now" for tradesmen — and make it the biggest, most repeated thing on the site. Every page has the same primary CTA at the top and bottom. Every button says the same thing. No competing options. Decision made easy.

The 30-Second Website Audit

Take your phone right now and pull up your website. Score yourself out of 5:

  1. Does the site have more than 5 pages, including a page for each service and area? (1 point)
  2. Can you tap your phone number in the header and it dials? (1 point)
  3. Are your Google reviews visible on the homepage? (1 point)
  4. Does the homepage load in under 3 seconds on 4G? (1 point)
  5. Is there one obvious "Call Now" button that appears repeatedly? (1 point)

3 or less? Your website is actively costing you jobs. Every week you leave it broken is money on the table.

4? Better than most trade sites. You'd still see a jump in leads by fixing the last one.

5? Well done — you're rare. Now double down by adding missed-call text-back, review automation, and follow-up sequences on top.

Fixing All Five At Once

You can fix these mistakes one at a time. Most tradesmen don't — life gets in the way, the website hasn't been touched in years, and the whole thing feels overwhelming.

Or you get someone to fix all five at once. That's exactly what The Kopa Growth Engine is designed to do. A full multi-page website (fixing mistake 1), tappable phone number and clear CTAs (mistakes 2 and 5), embedded reviews (mistake 3), fast hosting (mistake 4), plus missed-call text-back and automated review requests on top. Live in 7–10 working days. £197/month with no contract and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Whatever route you take, don't leave a broken website in place. Every week it's costing you.
